The dynamic duo of David and Shernita Dixon Powell spent 20 years in public service as Raleigh Police officers and contracted police for the U.S. Department of Defense in Afghanistan. Shernita also served in the U. S. Army.
Upon returning to North Carolina, they opened a local coffee shop, Java Dave’s, then opened a separate restaurant, Uptown 101 American Bistro, in the heart of Historic Downtown Oxford. The Powells, along with others, courageously presented to the City Council the benefits to Oxford of embracing the “Sunday Brunch Bill” and requested a related ordinance change. The effort was successful and laid the groundwork for other entrepreneurs seeking to open a local craft brewery. Shernita is currently serving in her second term on the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation (DOEDC) Board of Directors.
