2024 NC Main Street Champion
The Downtown Kinston Revitalization Design Committee is a dynamic force for change in the historic commercial district. This diverse group of dedicated volunteers passionately undertakes transformative projects that breathe new life into Downtown Kinston.
Under the leadership of Committee Chair Frances Theodorakis, the team recently spearheaded an $80,000 campaign to convert a small lot into a gateway memorial garden. Frances coordinated closely with a local nursery on landscape design, enlisted Boy Scouts to construct pergolas, and collaborated with an artist to paint a mural. This collaborative effort has inspired momentum to enhance all major entry points into the downtown district.
The committee’s work is further empowered by an endowment focused on revitalizing underserved blocks through targeted, self-identified improvements. Among their many achievements are a multiyear historic cemetery restoration project, funding and overseeing facade improvements on a mixed-use building, restoring a monument, and contributing to the ongoing restoration of the historic downtown Paramount Theater. By leveraging both private and public funding, the Design Committee has expedited meaningful progress in the district.
Through their commitment to collaborative community partnerships and high-quality transformations, the Downtown Kinston Revitalization Design Committee has become a true powerhouse for positive change.
