David and Stephanie Whitson bought the old Hampshire Hosiery Mill in 2004 and immediately began improving the landscape of downtown Spruce Pine. They soon expanded their small business and opened two additional businesses. They have renovated three of the four floors and plans for the final phase are underway. The mill, known as the Cross Street Commerce Center, is home to over 17 businesses and offers one of the only event spaces in town. In 2018, the Whitsons partnered with Spruce Pine Main Street to rent and renovate the historic McCall’s building. Within six months, a new restaurant opened, and a business expanded into the renovated spaces. The Whitsons take the lead on projects that benefit the whole town. From sponsoring events and school projects, to planting flowers and adding lights to our portal entry, they are 100 percent invested in the community. David and Stephanie have set in motion a wave of pride in the town. Spruce Pine Main Street is pleased to recognize the Whitsons as North Carolina Main Street Champions.
