2023 NC Main Street Champion
In April of 2021after purchasing a historic downtown property, John and Terri Bilott began their work to preserve the circa 1908 building damaged by a storm years earlier. The Bilotts brought the building back to life, its exposed brick walls and wood beams creating the perfect backdrop for their retail store, The Twisted Willow. In 2021 the business opened with beautifully restored church pews, antiques, farmhouse furniture, upcycled items, unique home decor, gifts, and more--a true shopping destination.
Passionate about Downtown Smithfield’s growth, the Bilotts joined the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation’s Promotions committee, which John now chairs. They have contributed new ideas, and even took it upon themselves to start a farmers’ market allowing local producers and artists to sell their wares and increase pedestrian traffic. Their efforts have also contributed to the Red White & Brews Festival, a food truck rodeo held before Smithfield’s Independence Celebration, and Smithfield’s first Oktoberfest event. John and Terri are always looking for ways to make their mark in Smithfield.
