Todd Johnson: Smithfield

2025 NC Main Street Champion

A passionate historian, Todd Johnson has long worked to preserve Smithfield’s heritage. In 2025, that dedication reached new heights when the historic downtown theater—operating since 1935—was almost sold to a church, Todd stepped in. “I have nothing against churches,” he said, “but we need to preserve it as a theater. Give me a day to make some calls.” And he did. Todd rallied support, negotiated tirelessly, and helped secure the theater’s purchase for preservation.

His impact didn’t stop there. While researching Smithfield’s past, Todd uncovered documentation of a Tuscarora burial mound once located downtown. Working with the America 250th NC Committee and Tuscarora elders, he helped create a mural honoring this nearly forgotten history.

Todd is the Executive Director of the Johnston County Heritage Center, Director of the Smithfield Heritage Foundation, America 250 NC committee member, and a dedicated Smithfield resident.

For his leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to heritage, culture, and community, Smithfield is honored to name Todd Johnson as its 2025 Main Street Champion.
