2025 NC Main Street Champion

“I’ve had the opportunity to move a lot in my life,” says Maura Johnston, “and I don’t want to live in ‘Anywhere, USA.’”
“I moved to Newton in 2015. Although my job did not allow me to work in town, I still wanted to be an active part of the community. So, I began volunteering with the Downtown Newton Development Association, starting with the Promotions Committee.
“At that time, it was a very small organization—very effective, but very small,” she recalls.
“Soon after, I was invited to join the board, where I served for six years before terming out. Today, I continue to volunteer with the Promotion Committee, driven by my love for Newton’s heritage, beauty, and unique character.”
“There are a lot of beautiful buildings downtown, and it’s a place that can really grab people’s attention—as long as everybody works together,” she says. “My advice? Support where you live, give back, and help it grow. It takes more than one person. If your schedule only allows you to volunteer at one event a year, that’s a great start. Take a bite and enjoy it!”
For her dedication, Newton proudly recognized Maura Johnston as its 2025 Main Street Champion.
