Julie Donaldson: Sylva

2025 NC Main Street Champion

Sylva Julie Donaldson

For 26 years, Julie Donaldson has been a guiding force in downtown Sylva as Director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. Under her leadership, the once-deteriorating Historic Hooper House was transformed into vibrant Chamber offices and a welcoming Visitor Center.

Julie’s dedication accelerated Sylva’s Main Street program. She launched signature events such as Concerts on the Creek, the Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration, and Friends Night Out—all of which continue to draw thousands downtown.

Never one to seek the spotlight, Julie can be found decorating the town Christmas tree, collaborating on projects, and stepping up when challenges arise. She plays a vital role in Greening Up the Mountains and helps fill empty storefronts, relocates businesses during road construction, and build strong merchant relationships.

Her visionary work also led to the creation of the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail, the first fly fishing trail in the United States, which earned Jackson County the title of NC Trout Capital in 2016.

Though retired, Julie’s spirit, leadership, and love for Main Street will continue to shape downtown for years to come. For these reasons, Sylva is proud to honor Julie Donaldson as its 2025 Main Street Champion.
