Town of Fuquay-Varina
Earlier this year, the Town of Fuquay-Varina asked residents and visitors to Tee Up for a day of competitive mini golf around their local downtown businesses.
The Play the ‘Quay Mini Golf Tournament took 60 (pronounced sixty) players from business to business to play of the holes of the course. At each hole, players learned more about the business and had the opportunity to shop and eat. Almost all of the expense was donated through the time and energy of the local business owners.
For two months prior to the event, Fuquay-Varina recruited fourteen businesses to build mini golf holes for players. Another local business, Hiester Chevrolet, participated in the event by providing “caddy” service for players between the town’s two downtown centers. Demonstrating to visitors how easy it is to navigate the two downtown districts was one of the primary organizational goals of Play the ‘Quay. On the other hand, having participants walk between businesses within each center also provided a lot of opportunity for people to explore new spaces and rediscover old established favorites.
The main economic goal of the event was to simply bring a new crowd of people to explore and experience Downtown. However, the restaurants, breweries, and boutiques that participated all saw a considerable increase in sales throughout the event. Play the ‘Quay was certainly a hole in one!
Congratulations to this Main Street community for its 2019 award.
