Historic brick storefronts, 'The Courier-Times' building, with red striped awning.

Until recently, 111 North Main Street in Roxboro was a vacant property with a crumbling exterior.

The property, built in the early twentieth century, is now the office for the Roxboro’s local paper on the first floor and a home for uptown residents on the second floor. The developer, Barefoot Development Group, leveraged federal and state Historic Tax Credits with funding from the City of Roxboro and the Uptown Roxboro Group to rehabilitate the property. Uptown Roxboro Group – the town’s Main Street program – awarded the owners a $5,000 grant directly for the façade renovation.

This investment greatly enhanced Barefoot’s ability to renovate the exterior portions of the property and to breathe new life into this vacant building. Specific renovations on the building’s façade included masonry installation and repair, awning removal, window installation and repair, new signage and lights, and a new doorway for the property.

The redevelopment of this property has spurred additional local development in Uptown Roxboro and incentivized other business owners to update their exterior features. Three façade renovations and two combined interior-exterior renovations were completed in the nearby vicinity shortly after the completion of this project.

Congratulations to this Main Street community for its 2019 award.
