Big Ideas in Small Towns

Our work in rural NC, affords us to see the tremendous efforts happening in our smallest communities (under 5,000 in population).  In order to highlight efforts that are being made, we will add posts about projects that have addressed the following:

  • Taking advantage of local assets.

  • Rehabilitating existing (often dormant) buildings into new life.

  • Promoting local creative artisans.

  • Implementing innovative ideas to help the planet.

  • Improving quality of life.

  • Seeking and employing grant funding for transformative projects.

  • Addressing pressing issues, such as affordable housing.

  • Incorporating art into communities

Submission Best Practices:

In writing your submission make sure you have included the best practices in writing a compelling story.

  • Who is driving the story? Who is it about? Who is affected? Who benefits? Who loses?

  • What has happened? What are the consequences? What does this mean for the reader?

  • Where is this taking place (building, neighborhood, city, country)? Where should readers go to learn more?

  • When did it happen (time of day, day, month, year)? When was the last update? When can you expect to learn more? When will the effects be felt?

  • Why did this event take place? Why is this important in the big picture? Why should readers care?
